Program Emphasis

My research interests include developing tissue culture and transformation techniques for efficient transformation of all commercially important citrus cultivars with genes that have potential to improve the disease and pest resistance of citrus. I am especially interested in the role of antimicrobial peptides in enhancing disease resistance in susceptible cultivars.

We are also investigating the role of transcription factors involved in the regulation of disease resistance pathways and Calcium binding proteins such as Calmodulin, Calmodulin-like proteins and Calcium-dependent protein kinases involved in calcium signaling networks and their role in plant responses to pathogens.

Another aspect of my research is the development of technologies to produce a plant-based GMO citrus, as necessary to improve the consumer acceptance of the resulting cultivars.
