General Information

The Caribbean fruit fly, Anastrepha suspensa (Loew), is a pest of many tropical and subtropical fruits of central and south Florida. Infestation was first reported in 1931 from Key West, Florida, and in 1965 more than 14,000 A. suspensa were trapped (Weems 1965) in the Miami area.  This pest has become an economic problem for Florida's tropical fruit growers ever since its population expansion into Miami (Weems 1965).
This focus of our research includes the design and development of a bait station capable of selective attraction of A. suspensa in which fly mortality can be achieved and measured relative to attractant and toxicant concentration and volumes within known environmental, physical, climatic and site parameters. Project tasks include:

• To design, construct and install prototype bait stations for evaluation of durability, operation, maintenance, efficacy and economic efficiency.

• To evaluate candidate toxicants and attractants.
