Electropenetrography (EPG)

Welcome

This web site is devoted to the study of hemipteran feeding behavior using EPG methodologies with a focus on the AC-DC system currently used by researchers at the Citrus Research and Education Center.

NEW IN 2023: EPG ONLINE WORKSHOP!

The EPG Online Workshop offers instructional videos to learn how to do all aspects of AC-DC EPG (with applicability to DC EPG) such as wiring aphids and large leafhoppers, recording feeding, reviewing and measuring recordings.  In addition, there are lectures on the history, principles, types of instruments, and waveforms of major insect groups. There is also a guest lecture on histological correlations by Dr. Holly Shugart of Pennsylvania State University.

NEW IN 2024: EPG CONFERENCE!

The EPG Conference will be held for three days (January 30- February 2, 2024), with two (optional) days offering in-person workshop events, one for novices with a focus on setting up the EPG equipment and wiring insects (Monday) and one for advanced researchers with a focus on data analysis (Friday).

EPG DATA ANALYSIS

Under the Data Analysis button there are four approaches to data analysis. The first three "EPG Systems," "EPG-Calc" and "Sarria Workbook" are links to the respective web sites where these programs are maintained. The relevant literature citation is included for the last two. As far as I know, there is no equivalent citation for the first program, though there are many manuscripts that have used this program. The final button leads one to the SAS programs. Please read "Data Analysis Using the Ebert 1.0 Suite of Programs" first. It may also be helpful to go through the "Worked Examples".
